Sr. Manners goes to mass
Our new series on HSI - Sr. Manners Goes to Mass has proved to be an instant hit going by readers' reponses. Here is one of the letters we received soon after Sr. Manners went online:
Ami writes: Your article about dress code with Sr. Manners is so appropriate this time of year. People who go to church with skimpy clothes on are a distraction. Our church has a huge Hispanic population and I have noticed that a good number of them attend Mass in spaghetti straps and other inappropriate clothes and the men in tank shirts. I'm thinking this is a cultural thing. What's your take on this?

Hmmmm.. It wont be long before people attend mass in bikinis then, don't you think? I mean seeing as how rapidly culture has been evolving owing to MTV and other such crazy things......
I know what you mean... In Bombay, too, the youth have started coming dressed most inappropriately. In spaghetti straps and very short or figure hugging clothes. It is a major source of distraction and sometimes an eyesore as well.
Especially when it come to the youth it the duty of parents to ensure their children do not wear provocative clothing atleast to church. And if the parents think it is okay, then maybe they should be questioning who they are really coming to meet.... ????
Wow, its a universal thing i guess...well,let me pipe in by saying that i'm one of those who gets really worked up when i see women dressed badly and men coming to church dressed like their going to buy groceries. Why on earth can't we also dress like that for a wedding? Would it be inappropriate?
Well, then excuse me!!! As it is most Catholics go to church just 1 hour a week, and to top it all they go half dressed or shabbily. I'm so sad. But i try to pray for these people so they may someday come to realise that it is important for them to dress well when they go to meet the Lord.
Ironic isn't it, when a person dies, we get them suited-booted and all the rest!!! Ironic.
Hi everyone,
Man sees the outsides the Lord sees the heart...
If someone comes to church in shorts and is more in love with Jesus than someone who is looking around and not paying attention to Gods word who do you think is going to be on Gods side ?
Leave it upto God to change peoples hearts...and fashions...
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will go strangely dim
In the light of His Glory and Grace
Hope this helps someone.
God Bless you
Lyndon
I totally agree that it is disrespectful to come before the Lord dressed with scanty clothing e.g. in Dubai,St.Mary's Church some of the Filipinos come dressed as if they are going for a walk in the park with skimpy tops and everything showing which does not allow people to pray. I don't know whether they know the real idea of coming to church is as they also keep talking all the time in church as if they are in a market place. It is very very sad as they do not accept it if told. I hope someone brings this out loud and clear during the mass as to how to dress and behave in the church and be strict about it.
